Screen printing or full-color DTF: which fits your order
Two ways to print a shirt, and the right one depends on how many you need and how many colors are in your design. In the designer, leave the method on Auto and it picks whichever costs less for each print, and tells you which.
Screen printing
Ink pushed through a mesh screen, one screen for each color. It's the best price per shirt on larger runs, and a solid, opaque print that holds up wash after wash.
- Starts at 12 pieces
- Up to 6 ink colors in each print location
- Screen setup built into the price per piece
- The more you order, the less each shirt costs
Full-color DTF printing
Your design is printed onto film in full color, then heat pressed onto the garment. Photos, gradients and fine detail come through, with no screens to pay for.
- No minimum: one shirt is fine
- As many colors as your design has
- Priced by the size of the print
- A different name on the back of each shirt, if you'd like
Light ink on a dark shirt needs a white underbase printed first, which counts as one more color, unless the design is white ink alone. Every price on our site accounts for it. Read the full comparison.
What screen printing costs
Each price is per piece, for one print location on a cotton or cotton blend garment, plus the shirt you choose. Fleece and polyester cost a little more to print. The designer shows your full price per shirt, garment included.
| Quantity | 1 color | 2 colors | 3 colors | 4 colors | 5 colors | 6 colors |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 to 25 | $7.03 | Full color | Full color | Full color | Full color | Full color |
| 26 to 50 | $4.98 | $5.78 | $6.59 | Full color | Full color | Full color |
| 51 to 100 | $3.19 | $4.18 | $5.19 | $6.18 | $7.18 | $8.17 |
| 101 to 200 | $2.58 | $3.38 | $4.18 | $4.98 | $5.78 | $6.59 |
| 201 to 400 | $2.20 | $2.79 | $3.29 | $3.69 | $4.18 | $4.69 |
| 401 and up | $2.00 | $2.49 | $3.00 | $3.48 | $3.99 | $4.48 |
Full color means that many colors isn't screen printed at that quantity, so it's printed in full color (DTF) instead, priced by the size of the print. Matching a brand color? A custom ink mixed to a Pantone color is $9.50 for each ink, once per order.

Screen printing questions
Answers about custom T-shirts, minimums, prices and timing. Don't see your question? Ask us.
What's the minimum order for custom T-shirts?
Screen printing starts at 12 pieces, and sizes count together toward it. Under that, we print in full color (DTF), which has no minimum, so one shirt is fine.
How much do custom T-shirts cost?
Screen printing one color on one location starts at $7.03 a shirt for 12 and drops to $2.00 a shirt at 401 or more, plus the shirt itself. The designer adds the garment, your sizes and every print location, and shows the full price per shirt before you order.
Do you charge setup or screen fees?
Screen setup is built into the price per piece, so there's no separate screen charge. A custom ink mixed to a Pantone color is $9.50 for each one, and if your art has to be redrawn, there can be a charge, which we'll tell you about before you approve anything.
How many colors can you screen print?
Up to 6 ink colors in each print location, depending on the quantity. Light ink on a dark shirt needs a white underbase first, which counts as one more color, unless the design is white ink alone. Designs with more colors, photos or gradients print in full color instead.
Screen printing or DTF: which is better?
For a simple design, full-color DTF usually costs less on small runs and screen printing costs less on larger ones. Screen printing gives a solid, durable print on bigger orders, and DTF handles photos and fine detail. Leave the method on Auto in the designer and it picks the one that costs less for each print.
How long does a printing order take?
Most orders are ready about 10 business days after you approve the proof. Rush can have many orders ready in 3 to 5 business days, for 25% more. Pickup at our shop is free, or we ship it.
Can each shirt have a different name?
Yes. Add names in the designer and each one prints in full color on the back of its shirt. For jerseys with names and numbers, see team uniforms.
What file should I send?
A vector file (AI, EPS, PDF or SVG) is best. A high-resolution PNG or JPG works too, and the designer checks it against the size you're printing, so you know before you order whether it will look sharp.
Can we stop by and talk it through?
Yes. Visit us at 10 Corporate Park Drive, Suite D in Hopewell Junction, Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm or Saturday 12:30pm to 4:30pm, and we'll go over shirts, colors and your design with you.
