What reads on a moving car
Someone behind you at a light has a few seconds, so a door magnet leads with the company name, then one service line, then the phone number at least two inches tall. A web address is a bonus; five services are a blur. On a 24" × 12" magnet the name can run 2.5 to 3.5 inches tall, which reads from about 50 feet.
Sizes
- 24" × 12": the standard truck and van door magnet.
- 18" × 12": most car doors.
- 12" × 12" and 12" × 9": smaller cars, tailgates and school and team magnets.
- 24" × 18" and 24" × 24": big box trucks and food trucks.
Measure the flat part of your door, between the body lines and trim, before you pick a size. Magnets stick only to steel: aluminum and fiberglass panels will not hold them.
Vehicle markings
Trucks over 10,000 pounds used in business need the legal name and USDOT number on both sides, in letters at least two inches tall, and federal rules allow a removable sign to carry them. Westchester asks contractors' vehicles parked at a job to show the name and address on both sides, readable from 50 feet; magnets qualify. New York City's commercial plate rules want lettering permanently affixed, so magnets do not count there.
