Spot UV: gloss where you want it
A clear, raised gloss on the parts of your design you mark in the designer, over a soft matte laminated card. The colors print as designed underneath.
Spot UV makes a logo or a pattern shine against a velvety matte card, so it catches the light and the fingertips. On a dark card, a tone on tone pattern appears only as the card turns.

You choose exactly what gets spot UV, and you see it before you order.

- 2 Mark the spot UV Select a word, shape, logo or picture and press Spot UV. It shows on screen as a clear gloss over your colors.
- 3 Approve your proof We check the spot UV and send a proof within 1 business day, the gloss shown in place. Nothing prints until you approve it.

Setting up your spot UV artwork
The designer checks each of these for you when you press Check my design, and says what to change.
- Mark the parts that get spot UV; the rest of the card stays matte
- Use it on bold shapes, logos, patterns and larger words: 8 point at the very least, 10 point and up is best
- The gloss can sit up to about 1/8 inch off the print, so give it room and avoid fine detail
- Keep spot UV about 0.2 inch in from the edge of the card, and from the fold of a greeting card
- The colors print under the gloss as you design them: a black logo marked spot UV becomes a shiny black logo
- Avoid small words knocked out of a big glossy area: they tend to fill in

What is spot UV printing?
Spot UV is a clear, glossy coating cured with ultraviolet light, laid only on the parts of your design you mark, over a soft matte laminated card. Those parts shine and feel slightly raised, and the rest of the card stays matte, so your logo or pattern catches the light and the fingertips.
How do I choose what gets spot UV?
In the online designer for your piece (spot UV business cards, for one), select a word, shape, logo or picture and press Spot UV above the design. The marked parts show as a clear gloss over your colors, and your proof shows the spot UV in place before anything is printed.
Does more spot UV cost more?
No. Spot UV is priced by the piece, its size, the quantity and the sides, never by how much of the design is coated. Mark one logo or a whole pattern.
Which designs suit spot UV best?
Bold logos, shapes, patterns and photos, especially on dark cards; a tone on tone pattern, black gloss on black matte, is a favorite. It is not for small type: the gloss can sit up to about 1/8 inch off the print, so keep marked words at 10 point or larger.
Can spot UV go on both sides?
Yes. Print the back too and choose spot UV on the front and back (on 250 business cards printed on both sides it adds $4.00). On postcards and bookmarks spot UV on both sides costs the same as on one.
How many do I need to order?
Spot UV business cards start at 100, greeting cards at 50, and postcards and bookmarks at 500. Every quantity it is made in is in the tables above and in the designer.
How long does spot UV printing take?
It is ready to pick up or ships after you approve your proof: business cards 6 to 7 business days, postcards and cards 6 to 7 business days, bookmarks 9 to 12 business days, greeting cards 7 business days. Spot UV is not available on rush. The designer gives the date for your order.
Spot UV or foil: which should I choose?
Spot UV keeps your own colors and adds shine and texture; metallic foil replaces the marked parts with gold or silver metal. For a subtle, modern card, spot UV; for a card that flashes, foil.
