Metallic foil: gold and silver that catch the light
Gold or silver metallic foil pressed onto the words, logo or shapes you mark in the designer, on a thick 16 pt card laminated in matte or soft touch. Everything else prints in full color.

How foil works in our designer
You choose exactly what gets foil, and you see it before you order.
- 1 Pick your piece Business cards, postcards, invitations, greeting cards or rack cards, in the size you need.
- 2 Mark the foil Select a word, shape or logo and press Foil, then pick gold or silver. It shines on screen as it moves.
- 3 Approve your proof We check the foil and send a proof within 1 business day, the foil shown in place. Nothing prints until you approve it.
- 4 Pick it up or have it shipped Free pickup at our Hopewell Junction shop, or we ship it to you.
Setting up your foil artwork
The designer checks each of these for you when you press Check my design, and says what to change.
- Mark the parts that get foil; everything else prints in full color
- Keep foil words at 8 point or larger, in a simple sans serif, and lines at least 0.75 point
- Leave a little space between foil letters and shapes, since foil spreads slightly
- Keep foil about 0.2 inch in from the edge of the card, and from the fold of a greeting card
- Nothing prints under the foil: it covers what is there, so do not repeat a foil logo in ink underneath
- Avoid small words knocked out of a big foil area: they tend to fill in

What is metallic foil printing?
A thin layer of gold or silver metallic foil is pressed onto the parts of your design you mark: a logo, a name, a border or a pattern. Everything else prints in full color. The foil is bright and mirror-like, so it flashes as the card moves, and it sits on a thick laminated card that keeps it smooth.
How do I choose what gets foil?
In the online designer for your piece (foil business cards, for one), select a word, shape, logo or uploaded picture and press Foil above the design. Pick gold or silver. The marked parts shine on screen as they will in print, and your proof shows the foil in place before anything is printed.
Does more foil cost more?
No. Foil on business cards, postcards, invitations, greeting cards and rack cards is priced by the piece, its size, the quantity and the sides, never by how much of the design is foiled. Mark as much or as little as you like. (Our foil presentation folders are the one foil piece priced by coverage.)
Gold or silver: which should I choose?
Gold feels warm and classic: it suits navy, black, cream, green and burgundy designs, weddings, holidays and established brands. Silver feels cool and modern: it suits black, gray, blue and white designs, tech and finance, and winter themes. Both cost the same on most pieces, and you can switch between them in the designer to compare.
Can foil go on both sides?
Yes. Print the back too and choose foil on the front and back (on 250 business cards printed on both sides it adds $50.00). On a greeting card, foil can go on the outside, the inside or both.
How small can foil text and lines be?
Keep foil words at 8 point or larger in a simple sans serif, lines at least 0.75 point, and foil about 0.2 inch from the edges (and from a greeting card's fold). Very fine type fills in. The designer checks every foil mark for you and says what to change.
Can anything print under the foil?
No. Foil covers whatever is under it, so the press leaves the paper bare there and the foil goes on top. Do not repeat a foil logo in ink underneath: a slight shift would show it.
How long does foil printing take?
It is ready to pick up or ships after you approve your proof: business cards 6 to 7 business days, postcards and cards 6 to 7 business days, invitations 6 to 12 business days, greeting cards 7 business days, rack cards 6 to 7 business days. Foil is not available on rush. The designer gives the date for your order.
Do you have foil invitations in 5 x 7?
Yes. Our foil invitations come in 5" x 7" and A2 (4.25" x 5.5"), with gold or silver foil on the front, the back or both. Need them folded? Our foil greeting cards come in A2, 5" x 7" and 5.5" x 8.5" with envelopes.
Can you design my foil card for me?
