Map the route first
Walk the route a visitor takes, from the door to the destination, and mark every decision point: the turn, the fork, the doorway. That is where an arrow goes. On a long straight run, repeat one every 20 to 30 feet so people keep trusting it. Keep one color for the whole route; a second route gets a second color.
The pieces
- This way to: an arrow and a destination, "this way to registration".
- Checkout chevrons: a line of chevrons that pulls shoppers to the register.
- Restrooms, keep right and entrance this way.
- Aisle markers: a number or a letter at the end of each aisle.
- Sale this way and order here, for the store.
Size and color
A 24 inch circle or a 12" × 36" rectangle reads well at walking pace. Blue and white is the customary color for information and wayfinding; save yellow for caution and red for fire equipment so the colors keep their meaning.
From the shop: Put the graphics down on a clean, dry floor, pressing from the center out. Dust under the edges is what makes a decal lift.
