Side or lid
The side faces the shopper, so it carries the name, what it is and the net weight. Most side designs start at 3" × 2"; salsa, pesto, the mason jar maple syrup and the bath salts are drawn at 4" × 3" for a pint jar. The lid is where the flavor can go big, so a table of jars reads from above: 2" circles fit most lids, and the tea tin is a 3" circle.
The facts a jar has to show
Net weight sits on the front in the bottom 30 percent, in ounces and grams: "NET WT 12 OZ (340 g)", or "NET WT 16 OZ (1 LB) 454 g" from a pound up. Food jars list the ingredients in order of weight, name any major allergens (the pesto calls out milk and pine nuts), and give the maker's or packer's name and full address. Salsa, pickles and pesto say to refrigerate, and the maple jar uses the grade in its exact words. What else your label needs depends on your product and how it is made; confirm it before you sell.
Stocks for jars
- Paper: for jars that stay on a dry shelf indoors.
- Freezer adhesive: for jars kept in the fridge or freezer; it goes on as cold as -20 F.
- Brown kraft: the farmhouse look of the kraft honey, printed in black and brown.
- White vinyl: weather resistant, for bath salts by the tub and jars handled wet.
Getting them
Full color roll labels start at 25 and are ready about 2 to 4 business days after you approve the proof, for pickup at our shop or shipped. Solid ink labels ship free by ground, straight to your door.
From the shop: Print the proof at full size on plain paper, cut it out and tape it to a jar. You will see right away whether it fits the straight part of the glass and clears the lid.
