Honey and maple
A honey label puts the word honey large, raw or wildflower when it is true, the packer and the town, and the net weight low on the front. Maple grades have exact names, Grade A plus a color and taste pair such as "Dark Color and Robust Taste", and all three maple designs hold that line. Grade B and Medium Amber are retired terms.
From the farm kitchen
Preserves, salsa, pickles and pesto list the ingredients by weight, any allergens, the net weight in ounces and grams, and the maker's name and full address; the salsa, pickles and pesto add a refrigerate line. Jam, cookies and bread from a New York home kitchen use the home processor label, with a home kitchen line, and the made on, best by label dates whatever came out of the oven that morning. What your own product needs is yours to confirm.
At the stand and the market
- Price dots: a price in big numbers for jars, pints and bags.
- Jar lid circles: the flavor on top, so a table of jars reads from above.
- Round seals: your farm name over a mark, for bags, boxes and lids.
- Wine, cider and mead: fronts and a back label with the government warning; the other required statements are yours to supply and check.
Print "Certified Organic" or the USDA Organic seal only if the farm is certified.
Ordering for the season
Full color labels start at 25 and the price per label falls as the order grows, so a season's worth in one order costs less per label. They are ready about 2 to 4 business days after the proof: pick them up at our shop, or allow a week for shipping before market day.
From the shop: Order price dots in the three or four prices you use most. When the harvest changes a price, a fresh dot over the old one looks far better than a crossed-out number.
