What the front of the label needs
The product name, largest; what it is, if the name does not say (wildflower honey, habanero hot sauce); and the net quantity, "Net Wt 12 oz (340 g)", in the bottom 30 percent of the front panel, set apart from other text. On a panel of more than 5 square inches, federal rules set the net quantity at 1/8 inch tall or more.
Home-processed foods in New York
New York's home processor rules ask for the product's common name, the ingredients in order of weight, the allergens, the net quantity, and the processor's name and full address, plus a phrase such as "Made in a Home Kitchen" at 1/16 inch or larger. The ingredient and allergen panel template has lines for each. Maple syrup labels use the official grade names, such as "Grade A Amber Color and Rich Taste".
Choosing a stock
- Honey and jam jars: paper or film; round labels for lids.
- Hot sauce and cold brew: film or vinyl, which shrug off drips and fridges.
- Coffee bags: a rectangle across the front, and a made on and best by label for the roast date.
