Letters sized for the distance
The rule of thumb is one inch of letter height for every ten feet a banner is read from. A 3 × 6 ft banner carries a headline of 8 to 12 inches, which has its full impact at 80 to 120 feet; a 4 × 8 ft banner goes to 10 to 16 inches for road frontage. The templates are drawn at those sizes, and the designer keeps your words two inches clear of the hems and grommets.
Sizes
- 2 × 4 ft: behind a table, in a hallway, at a booth.
- 3 × 6 ft: the workhorse, on a fence or a storefront.
- 4 × 8 ft and larger: road frontage and big buildings.
- Long and narrow: 2 × 6 and 3 × 8 ft for fences and railings.
Any size is possible up to 10 feet on the short side; the templates lay themselves out again when you change it.
Material and finishing
13 oz vinyl suits most jobs. 15 oz is heavier and blocks more light from behind; 18 oz is for long-term outdoor use and high wind, and it is the only one printed on both sides. Mesh lets wind through, which is what a banner on an open fence needs. Every banner is hemmed and grommeted free; pole pockets, sewn-in rope and wind slits are options.
