Stop the walker
Walkers read a sidewalk sign in two or three seconds. Lead with the offer in the top third, 20% OFF or BUY ONE GET ONE, put what it applies to in the middle, and the end date and the shop name at the bottom. "Welcome, come on in" and "we're open" work when there is no sale: an A-frame out front says the door is unlocked.
The retail year
- Sales: storewide, weekend, flash sale today only, sidewalk sale, everything on this rack, dollars off.
- Holidays: Black Friday on November 27, holiday sale weekends, free gift wrapping, free gift with purchase, photos with Santa.
- Seasons: winter clearance, Memorial Day and 4th of July sales, back to school, fall sale.
- Every day: new arrivals, gift cards, follow us, scan to order, pick up in store, hours.
Honest and legal
Give a sale an end date and compare it to a price you really charged. A store closing sale needs a license from your town or city first. Check the town's rules on sidewalk signs; many ask that the sign stay within a few feet of the door and leave the walkway clear.
