A sale sign in three lines
The offer (20% OFF, BOGO, $10 OFF), what it applies to (storewide, select items, everything on this rack), and when it ends. Then stop. Percent-off numbers should be bigger than the word SALE; drivers read the number first.
- Every season: Black Friday on November 27, 2026 and Small Business Saturday the next day, holiday sale weekends, back to school, 4th of July and Memorial Day weekend sales.
- Every day: grand opening, now open, gift cards available, curbside pickup, open with the hours.
- Thank you: shop local and thank you for shopping local, for the towns that turn out for their stores.
Honest sale wording
A "sale" or "percent off" claim should compare to a price you really charged for a reasonable time, and a sale with an end date is both more honest and more urgent. A store closing or going out of business sale in New York needs a license from the town or city first, under General Business Law Article 29-F.
Sizes and placement
24" × 18" signs along the road, and 18" × 12" arrows at the turn into the lot. Many towns limit how long temporary business signs may stay up and ask for a permit, so check yours before a month-long sale.
